“Newborn Baby with Galactorrhea: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment”

Jakarta

A viral video on social media is a TikTok video showing a one-month-old baby emitting a milky white liquid when her nipples are squeezed. The video, which has been watched more than 216 thousand times, shocked many netizens.

“Subhanallah, Almighty God, the 1-month-old baby has expressed breast milk,” he wrote in a video uploaded through the viral TikTok account.

The pediatrician, Dr. Ratih Puspita, said that the condition of newborns producing milk is known as galactorrhea. This condition can occur in both baby girls and boys.

Galactorrhea is caused by problems with the hormones prolactin and estrogen that are passed down from the mother to the baby while still in the womb.

“Approximately 5 percent of babies experience galactorrhea. It can be from birth, some even reach the age of 2 months,” said Dr. Ratih Puspita when contacted detikcom on Wednesday (17/5/2023).

According to Dr. Ratih, this condition can disappear by itself in two weeks. The baby’s nipples also do not need to be squeezed because it can actually cause other diseases in the baby.

“You can’t squeeze, there is a risk of infection. So it’s a local infection in the breast area because of the squeezing,” he added.

The infection in question is the entry of bacteria into the mammary glands so that it risks causing mastitis. These bacteria can enter through the milk ducts in the nipples.

Even so, parents don’t need to worry if their baby has this condition because it can go away on its own. However, there are signs that parents need to worry about, especially if milk continues to come out until the baby is more than two months old. Or, this condition is accompanied by bleeding from the nipples.
