Lilongwe –
A ferry carrying 30 villagers on the Shire River, Malawioverturned after being attacked by a kuda nil. Tragically, a toddler was found dead after the ship capsized and dozens of people were reported missing.
As reported CNN, Wednesday (17/5/2023), this incident was in the Shire River in the Nsanje district, Malawi, on Monday (15/5) morning local time. Local police spokeswoman, Agnes Zalakoma, said that 23 people out of a total of 37 passengers on the ship were reported missing.
It is feared that the missing victims have drowned in the river, which is teeming with crocodiles and hippos.
“People managed to save 13 people, while another 23 people were missing and the body of a toddler has been found,” Zalakoma said in a statement.
Rescue workers, said Zalakoma, are continuing to search for missing victims.
Zalakoma told CNN on Tuesday (16/5) local time that it was dangerous to cross the river and incidents occurred quite often.
“It’s too dangerous because (the river) is too shallow and in this river there are crocodiles that often attack humans and also hippos that cause incidents like the one we had,” he said.
