Unemployment in our country fell slightly in April to 3.4 percent of the working population. That’s 343,000 people without a job. Among the over-45s, the number of unemployed has even fallen to the lowest level in twenty years.
The labor market remains very tight and that is not going to change for the time being. At the end of last month, the UWV registered 156,000 current unemployment benefits.
In March, 357,000 people between the ages of 15 and 75 were unemployed. This amounts to 3.5 percent of the Dutch working population. The number of unemployed fell by an average of 6,000 per month over the past three months. The number of workers increased by an average of 9,000 per month in the same period and amounted to 9.7 million, according to figures from the statistics office on Wednesday CBS.
This means that just over 73 percent of people between the ages of 15 and 75 have a job. This percentage has remained about the same since December.
Unemployment is generally highest among young people aged 15 to 25. Unemployment among them has increased in recent months, from 7.5 percent in December last year to 7.9 percent in April. That is slightly less than the 8 percent in March.
Unemployment is lowest among the over-45s. In April it was 2.1 percent. That is the lowest percentage since 2003.
