“Chinese Cars Take Over Half of Russia’s New Car Market, Threatening Lada’s Market Dominance”

Cars made in China have already taken half of Russia’s new car market this year. Thus, the Chinese have entered the top three best-selling car brands of the aggressor country abandoned by the Western countries, rapidly approaching the market leader – the “Lada” brand of the local car manufacturer “AvtoVAZ”.

In April of this year, 9.2 thousand “Chery” cars, 7.4 thousand “Haval” and 6.1 thousand “Geely” were sold in Russia, moreover, the result of these three Chinese car brands mentioned above has increased eight to nine times compared to April last year . On the other hand, “Lada” sold 27,635 cars in the second month of spring.

According to the estimates of industry analysts, at the end of the year the Russian market will be dominated only by domestic and Chinese cars, and China will only continue to grow its market share. If sales of Chinese brands in the Russian market will reach 45 percent, then including Chinese cars that are assembled with renewed Soviet-era brands (for example, “Moskvich”), the share of Chinese cars in the new car market will exceed even 50%.

Chinese companies are actively expanding their offer in Russia, showing a sharp increase in sales compared to the same period a year earlier. The only dampener on growth rates could be the depreciation of the ruble against the yuan, which makes cars imported from China more expensive.

In the past year, the Chinese car brand “Chery” sold cars worth a total of 29.8 billion rubles (342 million euros) on the Russian market, “Haval” – 27.7 billion rubles (318 million euros); but “Geely” – in the amount of 16.8 billion rubles (193 million euros).

Over the past two years, the number of ads for the sale of Chinese cars in Russia has increased 15 times. In addition, the price of used Chinese cars has increased by 62% compared to 2021, or the time before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to analysts.

We remind you that after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Western car manufacturers left the aggressor countries, who not only stopped the production of their vehicles in Russia, but also the supply of models and components. It also affected domestic car manufacturers that depended, for example, on Bosch electronics.
