LG Display is doing very well in the OLED business. Now even Samsung chooses what was once a rival for several of its TVs.
“LG will supply panels to Samsung”
It is Reuters who reports that the company will start production of expensive 77 and 83 inch WOLED (white OLED) panels. The plan is for LG, which is also a South Korean company, to deliver more than 10 million OLED panels over the next few years. This is in an attempt to better compete together against Chinese companies.
To go more into the matter, there is talk of two million panels next year, and three to five million in the following years. This according to sources who have spoken to the news agency.
Fighting against Chinese companies
With the agreement in place, there are also possibilities for Samsung to become the second-largest manufacturer of OLED TVs internationally, helped by South Korean LG.
For Samsung, the agreement highlights how it wants to expand within the OLED TV market as competition against Chinese companies increases among the more affordable TVs. OLED panels cost almost five times more than LCD panels.
Reuters
Rumors of such an agreement have swirled in the industry for some time, but until Reuters sources revealed the agreement, it was not known which company. It turns out, with great probability, to be Samsung.
