“Saturn’s 145 Moons & Other Global News – May 16, 2023”

Dahlia orchids, have a happy Tuesday start!

You’re reading the Tuesday, May 16, 2023 issue of the World Today report.

We summarize some of the events that occurred around the world in the last 24 hours with the main report from the planet Saturn.

Saturn is crowned as ‘King of the moon’

Saturn retains its title of “King of the moons” after scientists discovered dozens of new moons around the gas planet.

An international team of astronomers, led by Edward Ashton of Taiwan’s Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, has discovered 62 new moons on the planet Saturn.

This means Saturn’s total moons stand at 145, overtaking Jupiter, which previously held the record with 95 recognized moons.

In the new study, the research team used a technique called “shift and stack”, to find smaller, fainter moons on Saturn.

Fire in a hostel

At least six residents died in a fire that broke out last night at a four-floor hostel in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.

Hostel Loafers Lodge has capacity for 92 guests, but it’s unclear how many people were inside at the time of the fire.

Wellington Fire and Emergency District Manager Nick Pyatt said 52 people were known to be present, while others were still missing.

“It is with a heavy heart that I can report that this will be a fatal incident,” Pyatt said.

“We sympathize with the families of those who have died and continue to support our crew who bravely saved them and are trying to save those who could not be saved.”

Americans convicted by China for espionage

China has sentenced a 78-year-old American citizen to life in prison for espionage.

Suzhou authorities “took legal action” against a US passport holder who is also a permanent resident of Hong Kong, named John Shing-wan Leung, in April 2021.
