What do you have to consider when planning your vacation?
For many, the weekend begins on Wednesday afternoon, May 17, the day before the nationwide Ascension Day holiday on Thursday. The ADAC therefore expects the first traffic jam peak on Wednesday from around 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The day after the public holiday, Friday May 19, is officially no school in the federal states of Berlin, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. In addition, holidaymakers from Hamburg and Saxony-Anhalt are on the move. In both federal states, the week-long vacation ends at the weekend.
The return wave then reaches its peak on Sunday afternoon until the evening. It should be relatively quiet on the highways on Friday and Saturday. In fact, in 2022, the day before Ascension Day was the second busiest day of the year.

Can there also be traffic jams abroad?
Ascension Day is also a public holiday in Austria and Switzerland. When the weather is nice, there can be lively excursion traffic. This can be noticeable in the road network of the Alpine countries, especially on the access roads to the excursion regions – for example in Austria the Carinthian lakes, the Salzkammergut, Lake Neusiedl and the recreation areas of the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Valais.
You also have to plan longer travel times on the Tauern, Fernpass, Brenner, Rheintal and Gotthard routes. However, the stays at the borders for entry and exit should not exceed 30 minutes.
How do I avoid traffic jams from Munich to Salzburg?

- Via the B15: The federal highway 15 also runs parallel to the A8 and offers an alternative to the autobahn. It connects Munich with Rosenheim and runs through places like Haar, Grafing and Wasserburg am Inn. Check the traffic information to make sure that the B15 is not also affected by traffic jams.
