The electric car manufacturer Tesla is improving the system that monitors the driver behind the wheel – now it will be followed how often the person behind the wheel blinks and also how often they yawn, which could signal possible drowsiness.
It was discovered by “Green” – a well-known Tesla “hacker”. Previously, Tesla has been criticized a lot that the manufacturer pays too little attention directly to driver monitoring – videos published on social media sites show how this system is tricked, the driver falls into the back seat and sleeps while the car drives itself, without the driver’s supervision.
The aforementioned parameters for blinking and yawning are used for the algorithm to calculate the driver’s fatigue and signal it to the driver himself. These things will be monitored both when the Autopilot and Full Self-Drive functions are used, and also when these systems are not used and everything is completely controlled by the person behind the wheel.
To keep track of it, a camera facing the cabin and built into the rear-view mirror mount is used.
