Prosecutors, who are investigating the alleged distribution of money envelopes at the Democratic Party convention, will summon independent lawmaker Seong-man Lee for investigation on the 19th.
On the morning of the 19th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office 2nd Anti-Corruption Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-chul) decided to summon Lee as a suspect and investigate. Lee is the first member of the National Assembly to be investigated by the prosecution over allegations of money envelopes from the Democratic Party.
On the 15th, Rep. Lee said, “The date of the prosecution’s appearance was confirmed on the morning of the 19th.” It is known that Rep. Lee will openly reveal his position on the matter to reporters before attending.
Prosecutors believe that Lee was involved in the process of distributing money envelopes worth 94 million won to lawmakers and delegates for the election of former CEO Song Young-gil ahead of the party convention in May 2021. Rep. Lee is suspected of donating 9 million won from 10 million won to be donated to the heads of regional headquarters belonging to the primary camp.
Prosecutors are planning to confirm whether the money envelopes were distributed, the person who sourced and received the funds, and whether the top officials, such as former CEO Song, intervened. After investigating Rep. Lee, the prosecution plans to summon independent Rep. Kwan-seok Yoon for questioning. The two withdrew from the Democratic Party when suspicion of money envelopes arose.
Prosecutors additionally searched and seized the residence of Mr. Park (54), who served as an aide to Song. The prosecution executed a search and seizure warrant that day to secure additional cell phones of Mr. Park. Park is suspected of being involved in distributing money envelopes worth 60 million won to Democratic Party lawmakers ahead of the party convention.
