“Prosecutorial-Political Saga: The Battle for the Chief Prosecutor’s Position”

What can be the reading of today’s statement of the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev? Has a war started between him and a certain circle of politicians? How will this prosecutorial-political saga end? Who “cooked” Ivan Geshev and why?

I am talking to the famous lawyer Ludmil Rangelov.

Today, with his statement, Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev clearly said that he will not resign and will try to serve his entire term. From here on, we will see what will be the development of this scandalous public saga.

We can categorically define what is happening as a war between two sides – the Prosecutor General and his cronies and, on the other hand, certain political persons who want his removal. Any weaker word will not reflect the real relationship between them.

The Attorney General is a political appointment as much as everything in our lives is politics. But the judiciary should be independent and the interference of political forces in it is unapologetically brutal.

A large part of the society, from the very nomination of Mr. Geshev as Chief Prosecutor, opposed his choice, but even his opponents and enemies did not expect that the resolution of this case would be sought in such a way.
I myself am already undecided about what position the members of the SJC will take on this issue. It is quite possible that they have already fundamentally changed their opinions about Mr. Geshev, whether or not this was done under pressure.

It is enough that five members of the SJC are against the removal of the Chief Prosecutor in order to fail to release him prematurely.

17 votes are needed to remove him from office, but it is unclear whether that arithmetic will prove correct.
The trials now unfolding are a severe blow to the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. It will take a long time for her to heal.
Yes, in the past, Mr. Geshev could and had reason to be removed because of some of his actions, with which he attacked certain individuals without having sufficient evidence for it.

But not in a way that is completely against the rules and procedures and shows the gross influence of political figures on the generally independent judiciary.

The removal of one particular person, whoever she is, plays no part in the judicial reforms that have been talked about for over 20 years. A special operation is underway, with which someone is trying to guarantee inviolability, inviolability for the moment, because maybe Mr. Geshev really has evidence against certain political circles. There may also be pressure from external partner services! But again, I emphasize that even longtime opponents of Mr. Geshev were surprised by the way the attack against him is taking place.
It is difficult to predict how this whole prosecutorial-political saga will end. In my opinion, the key to the removal of the Chief Prosecutor is in the hands of those who must form a majority of 17 votes in the SJC against him. Whether they will be able to gather the majority of 17 people, we will see!
People who for 3.5 years firmly supported the Chief Prosecutor, now want his resignation!
