Coffee prices soar as shortage of beans worsens

Mumbai: The price of coffee powder is up. Coffee prices are at a 12-year high. It is reported that the price of coffee and coffee powder will rise as the shortage of coffee beans worsens. Coffee connoisseurs may want to use high-quality premium Arabica beans, but the high price often forces them to use the relatively inexpensive Robusta beans. Robusta beans are usually less expensive because their tree is hardier and requires less care. Hence it is easy to produce in large quantities. Robusta bean powder is the most commonly sold because of its low price.

As fertilizer costs rose following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, farmers focused on planting more profitable crops such as avocados and durians. Even Vietnam, the world’s largest producer of coffee beans, is having its worst harvest in four years. In Brazil, the second largest producer, crops were destroyed by drought. There are also concerns that Indonesia’s production will be affected by the heavy rains.

But despite all these crises, more robusta beans were exported globally this season than in the previous three years. Exports between October and March were about 4 percent higher than the same period in 2021-22, according to the International Coffee Organization.
