Maluku residents commemorate 206th Pattimura Day with torch parade

Residents from five different regions of Maluku, including Kulur, Saparua, Tiouw, Porto, and Haria, commemorated the 206th Pattimura Day with a torch parade (Lari Obor) on May 15, 2023. This annual tradition is held to celebrate the patriotic spirit of Captain Pattimura, who resisted and expelled invaders from Maluku, which is nicknamed the “land of kings”. This event is significant, as it not only highlights the rich cultural heritage of Maluku but also pays tribute to the valiant efforts of the legendary Captain Pattimura.

The series of events for Pattimura Day started on May 14, 2023, with the kindling of the Pattimura fire by local traditional leaders on Mount Saniri, Negeri Tuhaha Village, Saparua Island. Despite having to trek uphill for about three kilometers, local residents were enthusiastic about the event. After the fire was lit, it was paraded throughout the lands of Kulur, Saparua, Tiouw, Porto, and Haria.

The Pattimura torch was then handed over to the traditional King of Tuhaha, Yance Sasabone, who initiated the march to the other villages. The procession was accompanied by traditional musical performances with instruments such as tifa and tahuri, and cakalele performances where indigenous children, immune to stabbing, lanced themselves with sharp objects.

According to Sasabone, the torch will be paraded to Kulur, which is still located at Mount Saniri. The procession will then continue to Waisisil and Saparua Square for the Pattimura Day commemoration ceremony.

At the 206th Pattimura Day ceremony in Ambon city, Maluku Governor Murad Ismail remarked that the young generation of Maluku must take inspiration from Captain Pattimura to develop Maluku. He added that Pattimura and his comrades marched without retreat, driven by the burning spirit and fire of struggle.

The Pattimura Day celebration is not only vital as an annual observance, but it is also an excellent opportunity for the younger generations to understand and appreciate their cultural heritage. The festivities serve as a reminder of the valiant efforts of Captain Pattimura, highlighting the struggle of the Maluku people against injustice and oppression.

Indonesia is a nation made up of thousands of islands, each with a rich and diverse cultural heritage; however, the Pattimura Day celebration in Maluku provides a symbol of unity and a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. It not only highlights the bravery of Captain Pattimura and his comrades in arms, but also the bravery of their ancestors in fighting for their homeland.
