Niels and Jeroen do not save Mia, Dion and their coach – or, correction: creative director – Duncan Laurence during the last Eurovision period. After the cabaret duo Saturday night must make way for the final of the music festival in Liverpool, they hilariously cynically fillet the ‘Arcade’ singer and his partner in a day later Even Until Here.
In the episode, which the program just missed a viewing figure record, Niels and Jeroen pay attention to the now about 400,000 lung covid patients in the Netherlands. They speak to Geertje, who is still suffering from severe complaints 2.5 years after her infection. “I can’t be the mother I used to be. I can’t go to the swimming pool, the zoo,” she says of the great impact that has had on her life.
Geertje now seeks refuge in playing the guitar and, as far as her lung capacity allows, singing. To draw attention to the large group of lotmates, she wrote a song about what it’s like to have lung covid. She can enter it Even Until Here perform, but not before she has been equally well coached by the creative team.
“You’ve just started, you’ve never performed before and you can sing a little bit? Then you’re just ahead of Mia and Dion!” shouts Niels. Jeroen falsely underlines the importance of a coach – ho, sorry, creative director! – if Duncan is.
Niels says with an American accent that Duncan ‘can only talk like that now’. “That has now become his statement, because he has an American boyfriend and then you just start talking differently.” And then follows a coaching session at Geertje’s home, with Niels as Duncan and Jeroen as Jordan. And, indispensable as the third creative director: shiba inu Cornald.
Viewers scream at the striking parody, but are also touched by Geertje’s story.
Even Until Here has been awarded the Honorary Silver Nipkow Disc. Pianist Miguel Wiels talks about this milestone and their success.
Even Until Here can be seen on NPO 1 on Saturday at 21:20. Watch the episode here back.
