Tsvetelina Penkova: Political instability in Bulgaria raises questions about the long-term commitments that our country can make

/Pogled.info/ “Bulgarian political instability looks worrying from a European point of view, and for two years now. This situation raises very serious questions regarding the long-term commitments that our country can undertake in any direction, including the Plan for Recovery and Sustainability. the BTV show “120 minutes”. She noted that by nominating a commissioner from the European Commission as the prime minister of a member state, it indicates that this is probably happening with the information and support of European partners.

“We must pay serious attention to what happens under a possible government. I also want to recall the case from 2016, when Bulgaria was without a commissioner in the European Commission for almost a year due to the withdrawal of Ms. Kristalina Georgieva. We should not allow this to happen again, bearing in mind that the mandate of the European Commission still has a year and a half left, i.e. almost 1/3 of the five-year mandate is still in effect,” commented Penkova and warned that a decision must be made very quickly on who will succeed Mrs. Gabriel if she becomes Prime Minister. Penkova does not rule out the possibility that this was foreseen and that the new commissioner could potentially be part of the negotiations to support a possible government.

“BSP will not enter into a coalition government with GERB – this has been the position of the party for years. Now the point is that the state, the situation in which we find ourselves, suggests an additional inquiry. As was said today by the leadership of the party, there is a poll of all members about a potential expert cabinet – in what direction and what position should we take”, commented the MEP on the burning issue of coalitions. According to her observations and conversations with socialists and sympathizers, there is no support for any kind of collaboration with GERB. “I raise both the question and the need for stability in our country, because endless elections is hardly the right model. We see that the results we produce within the last two years are quite similar and close,” she said and pointed out that when it comes to an expert cabinet, it is good to focus on policies and not on personalities. “There should be clear priorities and policies with clear deadlines for implementation, to address the current problems of people and Bulgarian society, and not to focus on personalities and ministerial positions, which for me is frivolous and irresponsible”, highlighted the main goal in the moment Tsvetelina Penkova.

“The left is strong in Bulgaria and is most strongly represented in the Bulgarian Socialist Party. We are still the only left-wing party in the parliament. At the event “Forum for Progressive Left Ideas”, a large part of the speakers and people who presented the theses and policies of the left were representatives of the BSP. We talked about sensitive topics and proposed solutions. BSP has always protected vulnerable groups,” Penkova is convinced.

Regarding the disputes about the Istanbul Convention, she highlighted the need for serious measures to combat domestic violence, violence against women, and violence against vulnerable groups. “There is a need for a serious change in our legislation, for which we have always pleaded, but there is also a need for a serious implementation of these laws. No matter how good a law is, it must first be accepted by society and secondly – it must be implemented and implemented”, commented the MEP and reminded that only since the beginning of the year there have been around 11 cases of female victims and deaths. as a result of domestic violence. Penkova pointed out that the core of this document has always been entirely in the direction of violence against women: “I am not a supporter of superimposing overexposed fears in any direction and for me this should not be done. The main focus and main idea of this document was the fight against violence against women. And this should be the direction in which we implement what is set as the main goal.”

Regarding the requested removal of the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev, Tsvetelina Penkova pointed out that the problem is with the powers and the way they are listed. She noted the commitment – judicial reform and revision of the powers of the chief prosecutor, and there is no way replacing one person with another will solve the problem.

In regard to The MEP stated the recovery plan and the actions under it:

“The stakes are high. Currently, there is a huge resource of unused funds in Europe, including under the Resilience Recovery Plans, not only Bulgaria. I.e. we must go for a policy of debt reduction and a reasonable deficit, but use the funds that have been given to us so that we can deal with the proper distribution of budget funds in each country. This is a key topic in Bulgaria at the moment as well.”
