“Body found in IJsselmeer: possibly missing sailor”

A body was found in the IJsselmeer tonight. Possibly it is the missing man who went overboard on a sailing yacht yesterday afternoon when he was hit by a boom. The police confirm the discovery of the body. It is not yet clear whether it concerns the missing man. The victim has yet to be identified.

The sailor disappeared under water yesterday and did not resurface. A second person on the boat jumped after him but could no longer find the man, after which the Coast Guard was called in. The second person was pulled from the water by the emergency services.

Since yesterday, the missing man has been searched near Enkhuizen. The search team used sonar equipment. Underwater sound waves can be used to detect people or objects.

A Coast Guard aircraft and a helicopter were also used to search. Then the police took over and the search resumed this morning. A spokesman for the rescue organization KNRM said earlier that the person on board the boat would most likely have died.
