“Russia has already lost geopolitically,” he said, referring to Moscow’s relationship with its traditional allies China and NATO’s expansion to Sweden and Finland.
“Let’s be clear, this is not a ‘special operation’ as Vladimir Putin decided to mobilize. On the other hand, Russia has made its historical allies suspicious of it. It has de facto entered into a form of vassal relationship with China and lost access to the Baltics, which was crucial for it because it accelerated the decision of Sweden and Finland to join NATO,” explained the French president, who is preparing to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is expected to arrive in Paris this evening.
“This would have been unthinkable just two years ago. So this is already a geopolitical defeat,” Macron noted. “Russia must not win militarily”, he stressed, pointing out that in this regard “it depends on us how to help the Ukrainians in their counteroffensive, how to prepare the issue of security guarantees for the negotiations that will inevitably take place”.
“I have always said that in the long term the European security architecture will have to fully secure tomorrow’s Ukraine.” But for this purpose, a way must be found to avoid confrontation with Russia and restore a sustainable balance.
“There are still many steps before getting there,” notes the French president.
