“Erdogan Leads in Turkey’s Presidential Election: What’s at Stake?”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has a slight lead in Turkey’s presidential election. So far, Erdogan has won 50.8 percent of the vote. His opponent, Kemal Klchdarolu, got 43.4 percent of the votes. It is indicated that the election results will be out soon.

The world is watching this election to see if Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been ruling Turkey for 20 years, will return to power. This time, six opposition parties faced Erdogan in the election. Erdogan’s main opponent is the 74-year-old leader of the CHP party, the candidate of the opposition alliance, the Nation Alliance. CHP is the party formed by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who is known as the founder of modern Turkey. The Nation Alliance is made up of left-wing parties, right-wing organizations and Islamist parties.

Erdogan highlighted the mission of leading Turkey to the former glory of the Islamic Caliphate. Economic crisis and inflation are the biggest challenges facing Erdogan. The opposition also strongly criticized the government for not acting quickly in the earthquake that claimed more than 50,000 lives.

The main promise of the Nation Alliance was to dismantle the presidential system brought by Erdogan. Muharram Inns and Sinan Ogan, two more minor candidates were in the contest. A candidate must get 51 percent of the votes to win the election. If not, it will proceed to the second phase of voting.
