“The Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan transformed into migrant reception centre and humanitarian relief centre”

This former luxury hotel located on 45th Street in Manhattan, a stone’s throw from 5th Avenue and the famous Grand Central Terminal station, had been empty for almost three years due to the coronavirus crisis. It will therefore experience a new life, in particular as a reception center for migrants. It will also house an “Emergency Humanitarian Response and Relief Centre”, which will offer various services such as medical aid and legal assistance.

New York has to deal with a large influx of migrants, up to a thousand a day. Some 30,000 people are accommodated in reception centers in the city, but these being overcrowded, the government is looking for additional places.

The Roosevelt Hotel has 1,000 rooms. Initially, 175 of them will be intended for families with children, then 850 eventually. A hundred rooms are also provided for the temporary accommodation of migrants going to other States.

The measure is expected to last three years and cost around $225 million, local media reported.

The United States also fears that the influx of migrants will increase further following the expiry of “Title 42”, a measure which allowed the immediate return of migrants without visas in the name of the health emergency.
