Ukrainian President says parliamentary elections only possible if martial law is lifted

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that parliamentary elections due in the country in October will take place only if martial law is lifted. He said this in an interview The Washington Post.

“If we have martial law, we will not be able to hold elections. The constitution forbids any election during martial law. If there is no martial law, then there will be. The law says that, according to the constitution of Ukraine, after the end of martial law, in my opinion, after 90 days, elections are held. Something like that. I don’t remember exactly,” Mr. Zelensky said.

Martial law in Ukraine was introduced on February 24, 2022. The last time it was extended on May 2 this year for 90 days. The previous parliamentary elections in the country were held in July 2019. They were extraordinary.

Following the results of the 2019 elections, the Servant of the People party (43.16%) received an absolute majority in parliament, which had previously nominated Volodymyr Zelensky as a presidential candidate.
