“Using Coconut-Scented Soap as a Natural Mosquito Repellent: New Research Shows”

Due to a combination of the humid and warm weather, we could soon expect a real mosquito explosion. All tips to keep those unfortunate buzzing animals away from you are therefore welcome. What seems? The soap you use could also affect your attraction to mosquitoes, new research shows.

The researchers, who published their study in the journal iScience, test subjects had themselves washed with four brands of soap commonly used in the United States: Dove, Dial, Native and Simple Truth. The subjects who had washed themselves with Dove and Simple Truth appeared to become more attractive to mosquitoes, while Native had the opposite result.

The scientists thus conclude that people can use soap to change their odor profile and keep mosquitoes at bay. But what kind of soap scent works best? Coconut-scented soap is a good idea if you don’t want to be kept awake all night by a buzzing mosquito. Coconut oil appears to be a natural mosquito repellent, according to the study. Flowery scents, on the other hand, are better avoided, because mosquitoes love them.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee of results, the researchers say, because the smell of people themselves can still thwart the effect of the soap. However, trying a new soap to repel mosquitoes never hurts!
