Official Opening of the Turfroute in Gorredijk after Years of Absence

GORREDIJK – After a few years of absence, there was an official opening of the Turfroute in Gorredijk this Saturday. During the event, a number of historic vessels from the Municipality of Opsterland entered Gorredijk, carrying shanty choirs from surrounding villages.

Upon arrival, the route was officially opened by Avine Fokkens-Kelder of the Province of Fryslân and alderman Rob Jonkman of the municipality of Opsterland. The new sailing season has started with the opening.

Old crafts, old Dutch activities, the sale of historical products and catering facilities could be found along the shore. Everything in the theme of the historic peat navigation that once took place in the Southeast Friesland region. There were also activities at other locations in the village.

From Turfroute

The Turfroute will be open in 2023 from 15 May to 15 September. The route runs from Gorredijk, via Lippenhuizen and Donkerbroek, to Oosterwolde. This is the Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart. The Tsjonger also runs from Appelscha to Heerenveen and the Frisian lake area.
