A phenomenon in Northwest China! Unique landforms were spotted in the Gobi desert. Huge concentric circles known as yardang have formed in the sand. This relief form is the result of wind erosion in arid regions, writes Nova, citing Reuters.
The word yardang is Uighur and means “small hill with steep slopes”. The landform in China covers an area of about 20,000 square kilometers in the territory of Qinghai, Gansu and Xinjiang provinces.
In Gansu province, experts counted more than 5,000 yardangs in the Gobi desert, which is the sixth largest in the world. The terrain looks like a set of circles with a common center but different radii.
