In the Hickstead CDI3*, Brit Carl Hester and his championship hopeful Fame secured their second Grand Prix in a row. Grand Prix was also ridden nationally. There Kathleen Kröncke rode in the front loop ranks.
Things continue to go really well for six-time Olympian Carl Hester and his 13-year-old Bordeaux son, Fame. At their second tournament after the double victorious premiere on the international stage in Tolbert (NED) a few weeks ago, the two were able to set an exclamation mark again in Hickstead.
The couple won the three-star Grand Prix with a score of 76.326 percent and thus improved on Tolbert by about half a percentage point. The gelding out of a Rhodium dam compensated for weaknesses in the walk tour and in the flying changes from jump to jump with passage, piaffe and canter pirouettes, for which he received a straight “very good” several times. “Fame is one of the greatest horses I’ve ever ridden – but he’s also extremely hot,” said Carl Hester after the test. “He has this fire in him that’s hard to contain and I’m just getting used to it.”
Laura Tomlinson was left behind and came second with Rose of Bavaria, a DSP mare who was also by Bordeaux descended. The mare competed in her first show after almost two years of abstinence from the international arena and passed the test with 72.87 percent. Third place went to Andrew Gould with Indigro by Negro and 71.174 percent.
Second victory for Carl Hester
Carl Hester was allowed to lead the lap of honor twice on Saturday. The 55-year-old secured the national Grand Prix with his 2021 Olympic horse in Tokyo, En Vogue. The ratings of the three judges ranged from 72.717 to 77.935 percent. The bottom line was 75.109 percent victory for En Vogue under Hester.
For the 14-year-old gelding it was the first tournament in more than a year. “He’s actually been back for six months but I’ve been waiting for the green season to start as he’s more of an outside horse than an inside horse so he hasn’t been seen this year,” explained Carl Hester. “He’s just such a lovely horse who’s also a bit special and sensitive which seems to be my pattern at the moment for choosing these types of horses – I’ve always liked them!”
Behind them, Kathleen Kröncke placed second. She sat in the saddle of Uniteds Maerchen, a 13-year-old mare by. United and was awarded 72.681 percent for their performance.
