Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin held a meeting with his compatriots in Guatemala and Korean businessmen on the 12th after finishing the ACS Summit and Ministerial Meeting held in Antigua, Guatemala on the 11th and 12th (local time).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 13th, Minister Park praised the efforts made during the meeting, saying that Korean compatriots and companies entering Guatemala have greatly contributed to the development of Guatemala as the center of the Central American textile industry, laying the foundation for the development of bilateral relations.
Minister Park promised to support the expansion of Korean companies’ entry, saying, “The phenomenon of ‘nearshoring’ in North America, which has been accelerating since the pandemic, is providing new opportunities to Korean companies in Central America, including Guatemala.”
About 150 Korean companies that have entered Guatemala are creating about 150,000 local jobs and occupying more than 70% of Guatemala’s textile exports.
Minister Park also explained the Yoon Seok-yeol administration’s efforts to enhance the benefits and status of overseas Koreans, such as the passage of the National Assembly’s enactment of the Basic Act on Overseas Koreans in April and the promotion of the establishment of the Office of Overseas Koreans as an agency under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in June.
Koreans and entrepreneurs who attended the meeting welcomed Minister Park’s visit to Guatemala, and requested government support to resolve local difficulties and expand business.
During his visit to Guatemala, Minister Park requested special attention and support for the safety of Korean residents and the activities of Korean companies through a courtesy visit to President Rejandro Zamatei and a meeting with Foreign Minister Adolfo Bucaro.
In addition, Minister Park said, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy will review the matters raised at this meeting together while putting the protection of overseas citizens and support for companies at the center of all diplomacy.”
