“Destiny 2 Cheating Scandal: The Cheat that Cost Almost R$ 60 Million”

Almost every player in the gaming community has wanted, at some point, to make it easier to level up, pass a stage, or be the best in the game. But it’s good to know that these cheats are not well accepted among gamers, much less by companies.

In addition, some acts can be seen as prosecutable crimes. So that’s what a player of “Destiny 2”, Bundie’s famous shooting game, learned in practice.

“Destiny 2” is a first-person shooter, released in 2017. The title, available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, has a multiplayer platform, in which players can face off in team combat or one against one.

With its fame, it was expected that many people would become great in the game, causing envy to many others who always want to excel.

Therefore, thinking of ways to improve the skills of those who play, Romanian Mihai Claudiu-Florentin created the VeteranCheats software, capable of circumventing the game’s settings, giving advantages such as automatic aiming and looking through walls.

So, the man started selling this system online to “Destiny 2” players. But the developer company promptly sued Claudiu-Florentin, in 2021, asking for compensation of around US$ 12 million, equivalent to almost R$ 60 million. In February of this year, the verdict was in favor of Bungie.

The producer claimed that several damages were caused with the more than 5,800 downloads identified. The amounts requested refer to DMCA infringement damages (BRL 57.8 million), copyright infringement (BRL 724 thousand) and the costs of the lawsuit to the company (BRL 1 million).

The site remained online even after the judge’s decision. However, it is no longer possible to download. As for Mihai, he was prohibited from engaging in any action that might violate the company’s copyright. Surely, the Romanian must have learned never to try to cheat in any game again.
