Redfall was a promising game on paper. It comes from the creators of Deus Ex and the studio behind Dishonored and Prey; that promised something. Yet something went wrong here. The gameplay, story and characters seem rushed. As a result, they are superficial and simply not fun or interesting. The progression in levels, skills and loot feels like a carrot cynically dangling in front of you, but when you eat it turns out to have no nutritional value whatsoever. The central mystery and the villains do not invite you to sift through and beat.
Co-op does something to save the gaming experience, but ultimately not nearly enough for us. The game becomes more fun and deeper, also in terms of the story, but at the core you are still engaged in the same basic combat full of bugs.
The game also rattles technically; framerates fluctuate and you’re often confronted with low-quality models and textures because the on-the-fly load but not hurry. The AI functions poorly: spotting the player or realizing that your buddy has been shot down a meter away is often not an option for the enemy. Sometimes the AI shuts down completely and an enemy stops doing anything, and if the enemies do function, they are still not intelligent.
The only really positive thing we want to say about Redfall is that the town itself is nice to look at and the supernatural sauce looks nice. Clear attention has been given to the world and the environmental storytelling in there. Here too we have to make a comment; we still prefer the worlds of Prey and Dishonored.
We have to conclude that there are much better open world co-op games, but also better looter shooters and even significantly better Arkane games. Especially for a price at publication of 70 euros, we have to tell you that this game is not worth the money. If you have any hope, or perhaps a morbid curiosity, play it through Game Pass; that will save you at least 60 euros. You’re really not going to play the game for more than a month.
Redfall is reminiscent of the series of games such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, The Last of Us Part I on PC, Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Fallout 76 and Batman: Arkham Knight. All games that could and should have been very good games due to their franchise, the stripes of their developer or both. Yet they fall short. Of course there is always the possibility to improve them with patches and additional content and that can also happen with Redfall. But honestly, with this game, we don’t even have a sense of it what could have been and so we actually don’t care if it will be polished in the coming months or years.
