The US President issued a statement ahead of the Fifth Conference of States Parties to Consider the Chemical Weapons Convention, which will be held in The Hague May 15-19.
“By working together to achieve our common goal, the United States is leading by example. We are on track to complete the process of eliminating our stockpiles of chemical weapons by this fall – a disarmament milestone that meets the highest standards of transparency and public safety,” Biden said.
The Chemical Weapons Convention entered into force in 1997. Its members undertake not to produce, not to use such weapons and to destroy all their stockpiles. More than 190 countries are currently party to the Convention.
