“Northvolt and German Government Announce New Electric Car Battery Plant in Schleswig-Holstein”

Northvolt currently has one completed and one under construction factory in Sweden. However, he subsequently announced that he intends to concentrate on the construction of a new operation in the United States and temporarily put plans for another European branch on hold.

But now Northvolt and the German government have announced the construction of a plant in the city of Heide in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is to produce batteries for approximately one million electric cars annually and will employ 3,000 people.

Neither party commented on the amount of investment. According to Reuters, citing its sources, it said that the construction of the plant will require three to five billion euros, with Germany contributing between 400 and 650 million euros. However, the state subsidy will first have to be approved by the European Commission. This would be the first German subsidies provided within the European Union’s temporary and crisis framework created to support ecological industrial projects.

The USA does not have to come out of the tug-of-war with Germany empty-handed, as the Northvolt spokesperson admitted that the company can start building two factories at the same time.

The debate on incentives for green technologies, an important part of which is the transition to electric mobility, has been in full swing since US President Joe Biden pushed through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Thanks to it, the United States is willing to promise companies that will build a battery factory for electric cars on its territory, support worth billions of dollars, the total amount allocated to support companies is 369 billion dollars.

In connection with the increasingly strong Chinese car industry, which is slowly conquering European markets as well, this can be a significant problem for traditional European car companies in the future. The introduction of American incentives also stimulated the EU leaders, who began to think about the introduction of similar policies.

one of them is French President Emmanuel Macron which, for example, decided not to wait for a possible agreement between the EU member states regarding the provision of subsidies for the purchase of electric cars manufactured in Europe. Macron announced support for European electric cars this week. “We don’t want to be dependent and become only consumers of American industry,” Macron said on Thursday. “It’s a small revolution that we want to bring to the European level,” said the head of the Elysee Palace.
