Syphilis known to be transmitted from pregnant mother to the fetus. How to prevent?
Syphilis is one of them sexually transmitted disease (PMS) is the most serious worldwide. Its distribution in Indonesia itself has increased.
Syphilis that is transmitted from pregnant women to the fetus is known as congenital syphilis. In most cases, syphilis is passed from mother to baby during pregnancy.
However, transmission can also occur during vaginal or normal births if the baby has direct contact with syphilis sores.
Obstetrics and gynecology specialist Muhammad Fadli said that pregnant women with syphilis should take Penicillin-G injections before giving birth.
“We do treatment. If pregnant women we usually do Penicillin-G injections, and we evaluate them. It should have been treated 30 days or approximately one month before he was born to prevent transmission to the baby,” said Fadli when contacted. CNNIndonesia.comFriday (12/5).
According to him, after a pregnant woman has been detected suffering from syphilis, she must be treated as soon as possible.
“Because the transmission can be in the stomach and can be direct contact during birth. Maybe [terpapar] syphilis germs in the female area,” he explained.
If it is nearing delivery and syphilis has not been treated, Fadli suggests doing a caesarean section to minimize the risk of transmitting syphilis to the baby.
“If infected and still active, yes, to prevent one of them by caesarean sectionbecause this can reduce direct contact,” said Fadli.
However, this procedure still does not rule out the possibility of syphilis transmission through the placental blood flow from mother to fetus during pregnancy.
“Because, able to, indeed the germs can pass through the placenta. So later it must be informed to the pediatrician team for him to do it screening,” added Fadli.
The things above need to be done to prevent a number of risks that occur to the mother and baby. Fadli said that syphilis has a risk of causing cognitive problems in babies up to miscarriage.
“If indeed [ibu] being detected positive for syphilis can cause a miscarriage, the baby is stillborn, it can also be cognitive skillIf it is disturbed, there can be problems with hearing loss,” he said.
Therefore, Fadli recommends that pregnant women do it screening several infectious diseases including HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis.
