Luxembourg will make its comeback on the stage of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024. The country has found participation too costly in recent decades, but now wants to give it another try.
“Thirty years after Luxembourg’s last participation, the government believes that a return to the most important music competition ever offers an excellent opportunity to reaffirm the European and international spirit of the Grand Duchy in the media and music field,” the government wrote on Friday.
The Grand Duchy expects that Luxembourg’s participation will also “contribute to the promotion of Luxembourg as a destination, its values and its image”. The government “promises the financial support necessary for the participation of a Luxembourg delegation in this competition”.
The broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest, the choice of the candidate and the participation of the Luxembourg delegation will be in the hands of the Luxembourg broadcaster CLT-UFA, which is a member of the European Broadcasting Union. In July more will become clear about how Luxembourg will choose a participant.
Luxembourg gave up participation after 1993 because it became too expensive for the relatively small Luxembourg broadcaster. The last contestant was the band Modern Times who performed the song Give me a chance took twentieth place. Luxembourg participated 37 times more, of which it managed to win 5 times.
Eurovision boss Martin Österdahl is happy with Luxembourg’s return to the Eurovision Song Contest. He made this known in a response on Friday. “We are delighted to welcome Luxembourg back to the Eurovision Song Contest after thirty years,” says Österdahl. “We very much look forward to working with RTL on their return to the world’s largest live music event in 2024.”
