Richard de Mos wants to be included again in the Hague college of mayor and aldermen, but will not return for the time being. The coalition parties are not open to it. The former alderman was recently acquitted of corruption.
The city council met on Thursday, but after more than four hours there was no concrete outcome about De Mos’s return. The coalition parties in the city council of The Hague say they are willing to talk to De Mos (Hart for The Hague / Group de Mos), but are still keeping the door closed.
D66, the largest party in the coalition, calls it undesirable that the existing coalition be broken up. “New negotiations lead to uncertainty, a year after the previous negotiations,” said party leader Marieke van Doorn. “The doubts we previously had about De Mos are gone, but this case has already destroyed enough. We have to repair and renovate, but not by demolishing the coalition.”
GroenLinks and PvdA say that the substantive differences between those second left parties and Hart voor Den Haag are very large.
CDA party leader Kavish Partiman also sees little chance of reinstating De Mos in the council. “You have to work together with the entire council and stand for the entire city. Also for the part that did not vote for you and never will. I see challenges there for a possible collaboration with Hart for The Hague.”
Debate continues next week
The debate is likely to continue next week. Then there is talk of, among other things, a call to Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgöz to withdraw the appeal of the Public Prosecution Service.
De Mos was an alderman in the city from 2018 to 2019, just like fellow party member Rachid Guernaoui. The OM thought that the two friendly entrepreneurs had helped in exchange for donations to the party. Because of the suspicions, the party was expelled from the coalition.
Last month, De Mos and Guernaoui were completely acquitted. The Public Prosecution Service has appealed to prevent the deadline for expiring, but it does not yet know whether it will really contest the acquittals.
