Ready, set, go! After an exhibition devoted to the year 1997 which revolutionized the history of fashion – from the opening of Colette to the rise of young designers such as Hedi Slimane and Nicolas Ghesquière – the Palais Galliera in Paris presents “Fashion in motion “, a retrospective dedicated to sportswear.
From June 16, 2023 to September 7, 2025, in the galleries on the ground floor, the Fashion Museum of the City of Paris (located in the 16th arrondissement) revisits the history of sportswear over the past three centuries, by a nod to the Olympic and Paralympic Games which will take place in the summer of 2024 in the capital.
Swimming trunks, yoga leggings, cycling shorts, running trainers… Thanks to its technicality and material innovations, the garment specially designed for the practice of physical and sporting activities differs from everyday outfits. However, sportswear is becoming more and more part of our daily wardrobes for its casual character, and on the catwalks, like at Koché who redesigned the AC Milan football shirt in a couture version last year.
A moving exhibition
The exhibition explores through the ages this dialogue between the daily world, leisure or competitive sport, but also the liberation of the body accompanied by sport and the change in the canons of beauty, social evolutions and the masculinization of outfits. women’s sports from the end of the 19th century.
The Palais Galliera hosts exceptional loans from the National Sport Museum in Nice, the Forney Library in Paris, the Chanel Heritage archives, the Emile Hermès collection, the Sonia Rykiel and Yohji Yamamoto houses.
In France, the practice of sport is not running out of steam and the sportswear market is surfing on a great dynamic. Evidenced by the observations of the latest Kantar Worldpanel barometer for Fashionnetwork.com, published in April, they underline the 10% increase in the turnover of the sport-sportswear sector which reached 2.919 billion euros.
The exhibition will also be on the move. The works will be presented successively during three hangings, this renewal of pieces for preventive purposes will require a period of closure of five weeks.
