“Genêts District Transformation: More Than 300 Housing Units to Replace Commercial and Industrial Area, with a New Shared Zone for Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Vehicles”

A large portion of the Genêts district will be transformed between 2023 and 2031. This area, which is now commercial and industrial, will be replaced by more than 300 housing units. To cross the island, motorists will be relegated to the background to give way to pedestrians and cyclists. Rue de l’Industrie will become a “shared zone”

Located at the extreme north-west of the Genêts district, rue de l’Industrie will experience many changes. With the particularity of arranging a road where all users share the same space. For example, if they wish, pedestrians will be able to chat on the road without being considered “out of place”.

A functioning that we observe rather in the historic city centers. However, this sector is rather industrial, with several large companies (Joints Lyonnais, Citroën, Renault, etc.) and few shops (Lidl and La Vie claire).

More than 300 accommodations divided into 18 buildings

This choice of development in a “meeting zone” is motivated by the arrival of 310 housing units in place of these sheds. The Pup (partnership urban project) of Les Genêts plans to demolish them in an area of more than 24,000 m²: nearly 22,000 m² of housing and 2,500 m² of shops with a transfer from Lidl and La Vie claire to future construction.

The first groundbreaking is expected for the end of 2023 with the arrival of the first residents at the end of 2025. The building complex should however be finished in 2031.

One way, limited speed, shared space

Between these 18 buildings of one to six floors will pass the rue de l’Industrie. While it stops today in the middle of this zone before going up to the North, it will cross from East to West. The existing portion to the north will be closed and replaced by a private pedestrian path.

Along the whole length of the street, vehicle speed is limited to 20 km/h. A profile 15 meters wide has been chosen and makes it possible to organize two pedestrian paths of 2.5 meters each, which will be lined with planted strips. In the center, 5.5 meters of track where cars, cycles and pedestrians will evolve together.
