Mediahuis has the European online news brand Euractive taken over. Euractiv publishes in thirteen languages and has offices in Brussels, Paris and Berlin. The acquisition strengthens the international portfolio of the Belgian media company.
Mediahuis, the publisher of, among others The standard, is already active outside Belgium in the Netherlands, Ireland, Luxembourg and Germany. Of Euractive has for the first time a news brand that spans the whole of Europe. The website, founded in 1999 by the French publisher Christophe Leclercq, reports on the policies of the European Union and, according to a study of the European Council is one of the most influential sources of news in EU journalism. Only Financial Times in Politico were quoted more often.
In the takeover, both parties speak of a ‘shared European vision’. ‘The journalism, the journalistic teams and the values of Euractive are firmly rooted in European society and form a nice addition to our portfolio of news brands’, says Mediahuis CEO Gert Ysebaert. The acquisition strengthens the international character of the media group. According to the press release Euractive in turn benefit from economies of scale, especially in terms of technology.
In total, about 200 people work for it Euractive. The company is managed from the Netherlands, with a subsidiary in Brussels, editorial offices in Paris and Berlin and a brand franchised to affiliated partners. Journalistic partners across Europe translate European news into a local context or messages back from their country. Income mainly comes from sponsoring, advertising, subsidies, a job site and events. There is also a premium offer for subscribers.
