The Expensive Rise of the Art Market in the 21st Century

Against all odds, globally, the 20th century art markete and of the XXIe century is more and more expensive. This is what we remember from the observation of recent results in the auction rooms of New York and London. Thus, in November 2022, Christie’s had organized for two days the dispersion of the Paul Allen collection which alone brought in the colossal sum of 1.6 billion dollars, an amount never before reached for a private collection.

The operation to liquidate the collections of the co-founder of Microsoft continues this season with seven works (including Georgia O’Keeffe and David Hockney) offered for an estimated sum of 30 million dollars, still at Christie’s. Until May 19, on the occasion of the modern and contemporary art sales, the whole of New York’s art market vibrates to the sound of the hammer of the auctioneers. If the figures are not as stratospheric as last November, the estimates put forward do not contradict the trend.
