$24 Million Settlement Reached for Family of Man Who Died in California Police Custody

California: The state of California has reached a settlement with the family of a man who died in police custody. The state reached a $24 million settlement with Edward Bronstein’s family. California will pay a $24 million civil rights settlement to the family of a man who died in police custody, lawyers announced at a press conference Wednesday.

On March 31, 2020, the police took Bronstein into custody on suspicion of drunk driving. After he refused to submit to a blood test, the officers held him on the ground and beat him. An 18-minute long video of the incident has surfaced. Bronstein can be heard telling officers, ‘I can’t breathe’ before losing consciousness. This video came out almost two years after the incident.

Bronstein, who was afraid of injections, was afraid of needles, the family says. The family said that they initially refused to undergo the blood test due to their fear of needles. “I’ll do it, I promise,” Bronstein can be heard crying as officers put Bronstein on the ground. But the video footage also shows an officer replying that it was too late. Officers also delayed administering CPR on Bronstein after he stopped moving. The Los Angeles County Coroner eventually ruled that Bronstein died of a severe methamphetamine overdose.

Anne Della Donna, an attorney for Bronstein’s family, says Tuesday’s settlement is the largest civil rights settlement accepted by the state of California. It is the second largest settlement in US history after the city of Minneapolis settled with the family of George Floyd.
