Roger Federer will return to Shanghai in 2023 as an “ICON athlete of the Shanghai Masters”, according to Chinese journalist Bendou Zhang. The Shanghai Masters was established in 2009 and Federer made his debut there in 2010.
During his career, Federer has made eight appearances in Shanghai. The Swiss won the tournament titles in 2014 and 2017while he finished runners-up in the tournament on his debut in 2010.
After three years without a Masters tournament due to the pandemic, Shanghai returns to the ATP calendar and Federer will be the guest of the 2023 edition of the tournament.
Federer defeated Rafael Nadal for his second title in Shanghai.
In 2010, Federer was beaten by Andy Murray in the final of the Shanghai tournament.
Four years later, Federer won his first title in Shanghai by beating Gilles Simon in the final. In 2017, Federer won his second and final title in Shanghai beating Rafael Nadal 6-4 6-3.
After beating Nadal, Federer said he entered the final relaxed. “I wasn’t really nervous before the game, which was nice. I was pretty clear about how I wanted to play the game.
Then I started playing and I started very well. I felt relaxed from then on. I always know that Rafa can come back at any time if he concentrates well, picks the right sides and does the right thing.
I even felt that leading 0/40, you know, going for the double break, but I had a clear game plan and felt like I played well all week. I think it calmed my nerves, because I was going back well from the first game I played here against Schwartzman.”My service has only improved.
I think I saved the best for last. I played good matches against del Potro and now these two sets. In a way, that’s not surprising, because I felt great all week, and it pays to get to an event early.
You can’t always do it, but I’ve been here since late Thursday evening and it’s been five or six days to prepare for a Wednesday game. So I was ready,” Federer said after beating Nadal in the 2017 Shanghai final.
