Pakistan in Chaos: Political Turmoil and Economic Crisis

[앵커]

Pakistan, the fifth most populous country in the world with a population of 230 million, is falling into a total crisis.

Following a major flood last year amid severe economic difficulties, even bloody protests broke out following the arrest of a former prime minister recently, and even the political situation faced chaos.

This is reporter Kim Jin-ho’s report.

Following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who led anti-government protests after being ousted last year for a vote of no confidence in parliament, on the 9th, he was arrested on charges of corruption.

Supporters of former Prime Minister Khan staged violent protests in major cities including Karachi, burning police cars.

[아루바 알리 / 칸 전 총리 지지자 : 임란 칸은 석방돼야 합니다. 그에게 일어나고 있는 일은 불공평합니다. 평화 시위에 경찰이 최루탄을 쏘고 있습니다.]

Police responded by firing tear gas and water cannons, killing at least four people and injuring dozens in the process.

Authorities are reacting strongly to the protests by arresting more than 1,000 people, including aides and supporters of former Prime Minister Khan, and imposing a ban on gatherings in major cities.

[셰바즈 샤리프 / 파키스탄 총리 : 법을 손에 쥐고 흔드는 가해자들은 철퇴를 맞을 것입니다. 그들은 법과 헌법에 따라 처벌을 받게 될 것입니다.]

However, confusion is expected to continue as former Prime Minister Khan plans to continue the protests.

This political chaos is becoming a fatal blow to Pakistan’s economy, which was already collapsing.

The Pakistani economy, which suffered from external debt due to large-scale infrastructure investments such as China’s Belt and Road, fell into a quagmire as the Corona 19 incident and the war in Ukraine continued.

People’s livelihood is also serious enough that the consumer price index in April increased by 36.4%, the highest since statistics were compiled in 1965.

The situation was especially aggravated by the great flood last year, when one-third of the country was submerged in water.

With the upcoming general elections scheduled for October, it does not seem easy to resolve political chaos in Pakistan.
