the essentials in brief

  • Rafael Nadal is worried about participating in “his” French Open.
  • The sand king has been struggling with hip problems for weeks.
  • Ex-rival Roger Federer (41) keeps his fingers crossed for the 36-year-old.

Time is slowly but surely running out: Rafael Nadal has to cancel his participation in the Masters in Rome. It is questionable whether he can start at the French Open in Paris.

Hip problems since Australian Open

For more than three months he has been battling a hip injury sustained at the Australian Open earlier this year. That’s why he recently missed the tournaments in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Now comes Rome.

His coach Carlos Moya recently gave an update: “Rafa is a competitive animal and it’s his favorite time of the year. But the goal remains Roland Garros.” One thing is clear: it will be a race against time.

Roger Federer: «French Open without Rafa would be brutal»

Roger Federer is one of the people who really wants Rafael Nadal to take part in his favorite tournament. For a good two decades, the two have dueled on the tennis court. They are among the best players in history.

As part of the Formula 1 GP in Miami, the Swiss said to “Sky Sports”: “It would be brutal and tough for tennis if Rafa did not take part in the French Open.”

Nadal has not missed a single edition of the French Open since 2005. He has won the tournament 14 times so far. Four times (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011) he defeated Federer in the final.

Do you think Rafael Nadal can compete in the French Open?

In addition to Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic has also been struggling recently. “He didn’t play that much, I hope he’ll still be in shape,” says the Maestro. It won’t be easy for the two of them to keep up with all the boys who are slowly catching on.
