“EU Prepares More Hermetic Sanctions Targeting Third Countries Helping Russia Circumvent Restrictions”

The European Union is preparing the 11th package of restrictions, affecting primarily third countries that help Moscow circumvent sanctions. The project, where the ideas are collected, has already been handed over to the member countries for familiarization, Radio Liberty correspondent Zoryana Stepanenko notes for TSN.

Officially, the 11th package has not yet been presented, but its details are already appearing in the media, and these anti-Russian sanctions have already been called more hermetic – closing holes, helping Russia bypass existing restrictions. To do this, they want to hit its assistants with punitive measures, that is, third countries that provide Russia with a bypass route: from Kazakhstan to China.

The fact that instead of simply hitting more people and goods, the EU wants to persecute entire countries that open Russia access to high-tech products from Europe that are sanctioned for it, was learned from its sources in diplomatic and European institutional circles by the Politico publication. EU officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the 11th package could hurt Iranian and Chinese companies.

Radio Liberty has obtained a list of possible blacklisted candidates. There are seven Chinese companies there: the EU accuses them of selling equipment to support the Russian military machine. One of them, according to the Financial Times, is already under US sanctions. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has already reacted to the plans of the European Union, made public by journalists, and said, “if these sanctions come into force, China will take decisive measures to protect its interests.”

To approve the restrictions, as usual, you need the approval of all EU member states. The European Commission has already shared its ideas and proposals last week, the first discussion is the day after tomorrow. Diplomats who spoke with Politico warn of lengthy discussions. It is doubtful that agreements will come by this or next week. Noting that Germany is concerned about the prospect of sanctions against China, and even more worrying in many EU countries, according to the publication, are possible restrictions on Turkey, a key trading partner of the European Union and a NATO ally.

They are worried, according to the Politico publication, because of a possible revenge, which will consist in letting more migrants to the European borders. Recall that in the published secret documents of the Pentagon, the reliability of which, meanwhile, needs to be confirmed, Turkey is defined as one of the main countries that provides Russia with loopholes to circumvent sanctions.
