Reece Thompson (30) was just five years old when he stood in front of the camera for “Titanic” in 1997 and won the hearts of the audience with an emotional scene. In James Cameron’s (68) blockbuster, Thompson was seen with Jenette Goldstein (63), who embodied his Irish mother.
He only had one sentence to say. As the sinking ship’s cabin slowly filled with water, the boy asked, “What are we doing, Mommy?” His mother replied, “We’re just waiting, honey. When they’re done putting the first class people in the boats, they start with us. And we want to be ready, don’t we?”
As is well known, things turned out differently and most of the third-class passengers found their wet grave in the Titanic. But for Reece Thompson, his small role should pay off for a long time.
Child actors from “Titanic” still get royalties
As msn.com reports, Thompson, who now works as a director of digital marketing in Utah, still gets checks — at least in theory. There is a small problem:
In an interview with Australia’s Network 10, Thompson confirmed he’s still owed a regular payment. However, he has not received any money for several years. The reason: He has moved and has not yet updated his address. Should he catch up, Thompson believes in the outstanding checks: “I just assume that they will come.”
Titanic actor gets up to $300 a year for small role
Thompson last talked about his fee in a conversation with businessinsider.com in 2018. At the time, he explained that he was paid about $30,000 for his role in the film. Added to this would be the royalties, which spread over the year between 200 and 300 US dollars (about 180 to 270 euros).
“It’s weird because I’m not aware of it anymore,” the former child star explained, adding, “It’s not like, ‘Oh, when do I get another Titanic check?’ When it happens, it’s like, ‘Oh, cool, an extra $100.’” If Thompson finally decides to finally tell the authorities about his change of address, he can probably look forward to a bigger windfall.
