Truecaller Chief Executive Alan Mamedi explained that the feature is currently in the beta stage and will be rolled out globally this May, Reuters reported on Monday (8/5/2023) local time.

Telemarketing and scamming calls have been on the rise in countries like India, where users get an average of around 17 spam calls per month, according to a 2021 Truecaller report.

India’s telecommunications regulator in February directed carriers such as Jio and Airtel to begin blocking telemarketing calls over their networks using artificial intelligence filters. Meanwhile Truecaller is in discussions with telecom operators to implement such a solution.

“Over the past two weeks, we have seen a spike in user reports from India about spam calls via WhatsApp,” said Mamedi.

He noted that switching telemarketers to internet calling is a fairly new mode in the market. Whereas WhatsApp is the most used messaging platform in India.

The company uses spam detection technology to find and take action on accounts that engage in abnormal behavior and allows users to block and report problem accounts.

Truecaller, has its largest market in India with 250 million users, has 350 million users globally and derives its revenue from advertising, subscription services and verified listings from businesses.
