He Museo New York Metropolitan (Met) announced on Tuesday a plan to control the origen his construction in view of the increasing scrutiny of the authorities in recent years and the increase in returns of antiquities that were looted from their countries.
The director of the institution, Max Hollein, disclosed this Tuesday in a letter that the Met is going to incorporate a team of four people to analyze the origin of his worksand that it will reinforce this work in the case of those that come from art dealers that have been investigated.
Hollein estimated that the control will affect “several hundred” pieces, most of which came to the collection between 1970 and 1990in a period of great growth in the museo in which “there was less information available and less scrutiny” about his origen.
He Metwhich has one of the largest collections in the world, with 1.5 million construction spanning 5,000 years of history, It has returned in recent years antiquities that had been looted from Egypt, Greece, Italy, Nepal, Nigeria or Turkey, after investigations by the authorities.
“It is incumbent upon the Met to more intensively and proactively examine certain areas of the collection and increase the resources we dedicate to this crucial work”said the director in the note, who insisted that he already has a team of auditing experts on his staff and that the new team is “additional.”
He Met it has also formed a committee of 18 curators, curators and technicians to review museum policies and practices and to advise the institution’s staff and board of trustees on matters of origin.
Apart from those efforts, the Met seeks to position itself at the forefront of discussions on “cultural property” and plans to bring together activists and “opinion makers” on this issue, inside and outside the museowith reports, alliances and activities, indicates the letter.
