NYERI Migraines can be more common in women than men. Women are two to three times more likely to have a migraine in their lifetime than men, and the condition is most common in women ages 18 to 44.
Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston say migraines can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes, as broadcast by ANTARA, citing Medical Daily, Friday (5/5).
These researchers undertook a large-scale study to determine the relationship between preexisting migraines and the likelihood of developing gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, preterm labor, and low birth weight during pregnancy.

The findings of their study, published in the journal Neurology, showed that while migraines were not linked to gestational diabetes or low birth weight, migraines were linked to a 17 percent higher risk of preterm birth, a 28 percent higher risk of gestational hypertension, and a 40 percent higher risk of preeclampsia. tall.
The researchers noticed that women’s chances of complications during pregnancy increased as their headaches became more severe. However, those taking aspirin had a much lower risk of preterm birth and related complications, especially preeclampsia, according to research findings.
Sarah E. Vollbracht, a professor of neurology at Columbia University in New York who was not involved in the study, said migraine screening should be included in the initial obstetric assessment given the findings.

“Given the high prevalence of migraine in women of childbearing age, these findings suggest that migraine screening should be included in the initial obstetric assessment to determine if a woman is at risk for an adverse pregnancy outcome,” said Vollbracht.
Dr. Matthew Robbins, a professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, who was also not involved in the study, said the findings would likely provide new avenues for future research on the subject.
“Now we know this risk can extend to pregnancy complications including higher rates of pregnancy-specific cardiovascular conditions such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia,” Robbins said. (waf)
