“Le Petit Robert adds new meaning to ‘basin’ in agriculture – opponents of water substitution reserves speak out”

In its new edition to be published on May 11, Le Petit Robert includes a new line devoted to the word “basin”. From now on, the meaning used to designate an open water reservoir in agriculture is considered by the dictionary as part of the lexicon of the French language.

Are the opponents of substitute water reserves in agriculture winning the battle of language? The entry of the word “basin”, in the sense of “reservoir”in dictionary Little Robert in its new edition to be published on May 11, testifies to the fact that this use is now part of the lexicon of the French language.

Until now, when the reader opened the dictionary at the line “basin”, he found as a definition a “wide and deep basin used for various domestic or industrial purposes”such “a copper basin” or “a bowl of fries” or “to jams”.

From now on, the very recent new use, stemming from the fight of opponents of water substitution reserves in agriculture, has entered this reference dictionary. A “basin”, in agriculture, designates a “huge open water reservoir used for irrigation”.

The lexicographers of Little Robert add a remark to this definition to clarify that “in this sense, we also say mega-basin”.

Basin, mega-basin, two terms that irrigating farmers had hitherto fought for their militant character, as they were used by opponents of these reserves to better denigrate them.

The word enters along with many others, such as “complosphere”, to designate the“group of people who participate in the dissemination of ideas deemed conspiratorial on the Internet” or “metavers”, an Anglicism from the sphere of computing to designate a “persistent three-dimensional virtual universe that offers its users, represented by avatars, an interactive and immersive experience”.

For the Petit Robert, the entry of all these new words bears witness to the“extraordinary vitality of our language”. The dictionary recalls that its objective remains to “provide tools for clearly and finely expressing one’s thoughts (…), the antithesis of an automatic, aggregated expression, generated by a artificial intelligence”.
