“Submarine’s Final Voyage: Transferring to Technik Museum Sinsheim Speyer via Rhine”

While thousands of people come to Düsseldorf on Saturday (May 13) to experience Japan Day there, a unique event is taking place on the Rhine. A submarine makes its last journey to the Technik Museum Sinsheim Speyer and will also pass Düsseldorf. Since it does not travel under water, but is transported on a floating pontoon, it is easy to see and will certainly attract many interested people to the banks of the Rhine. The museum has put the route of the submarine and the exact timetable with GPS tracking online: www.technik-museum.de/u17

The 206A class submarine entered service in 1973 and was built by the Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft. It is 48.49 meters long, 4.58 meters wide and 4.3 meters high. It was retired in Eckernförde in December 2010. After stations in the naval arsenal of the Bundeswehr, it was demilitarized in dry dock and thoroughly cleaned on the outside.

With a weight of around 500 tons, transport is a challenge. From Kiel it went through the Kiel Canal and across the North Sea to Rotterdam. The next stage leads on the Rhine via Nijmegen to Duisburg, where the submarine is scheduled to arrive on Friday (May 12). On Saturday (May 13th) we will pass Düsseldorf to Cologne. The arrival in the natural harbor in Speyer is scheduled for May 17th. From there it goes as a heavy road transport to the Technik Museum Speyer.

Interested parties can find all information on transport, funding opportunities, the detailed schedule and GPS tracking at www.technik-museum.de/u17
