The blood reserves in Asturias are going through a compromised situation. Donations of all blood groups are needed, but zero-positive donations are particularly urgent. The stock of this type of blood “is at a critical level”, explained to LA NUEVA ESPAÑA Ana María Ojea, technical director of the Asturias Community Center for Blood and Tissues (CCST).
Dr. Ojea makes an appeal to “go to donate as soon as possible” to those people in that group, which is one of the majority among the population. “The problem with zero positive is that it cannot be replaced by another, something that does not happen in other blood groups”, points out the hematologist.
The shortage of zero positive is due to “a succession of emergency situations that have generated high consumption” in various hospitals in the region in recent days. On the other hand, the holidays and the dynamics of the month of May increase the mobility of people, with a double effect: more accidents (traffic or of another nature) that increase the demand for blood; and less availability of donors to go to extraction points.
On the other hand, so far this year an increase of 4 percent in blood consumption has been registered in the Principality in relation to the same period last year; and a 2.3 percent drop in donations. “We are talking about the fact that the demand has grown almost twice as much as the supply, and this is problematic,” says Dr. Ojea.
The technical director of the CCST underlines the facilities offered by the fixed donation points: one in Oviedo, two in Gijón and one in Avilés. The one in Oviedo is located at the headquarters of the Community Center for Blood and Tissues, next to the old HUCA, and works from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Gijón donation points are located at the Puerta de la Villa health center (Calle Donato Argüelles, 20, on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) and at the Hospital de Cruz Roja (Calle Uría, 37, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). And in Avilés you can donate blood in Plaza Santiago López, number 1, on Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, the mobile units of the Community Blood and Tissue Center will be located, today, Tuesday, in Avilés (La Luz neighborhood) and in Carbayín Bajo and Alto (Siero). And tomorrow Wednesday in the council of Aller (Felechosa and Cabañaquinta), Gijón (Red Cross Hospital in the morning), Asturias Technology Park (Impulso company, in the morning), Riaño (in front of the House of Culture) and Cornellana (in front of the health center, in the afternoon).
