Lupus can affect anyone, but generally it is nine to one in women to men.
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Health practitioner specialist in internal medicine, dr. Anna Ariane, SpPD-KR said that women have nine times more risk of developing lupus than men. “Lupus can affect anyone, but generally it is women with a ratio of nine to one to men,” he said in a discussion event on lupus which was attended online in Jakarta, Tuesday. He said people who have a family history of any type of autoimmune disease will be more susceptible to lupus. He explained that lupus generally occurs in patients in the age range of 20-40 years. “Even in some cases there are also many lupus that attacks children under the age of 18 years,” added the doctor who practices at the National Central General Hospital, dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM). Although lupus is not a contagious disease, he said, lupus can be triggered by an unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking and a lack of vitamin D.
He said lupus is classified as a chronic disease such as diabetes and hypertension because basically this disease is caused by antibodies that produce spontaneously in the body.
“This disease cannot be cured completely, the target is to be controlled like diabetes which is treated until blood sugar is normal with the lowest possible dose of medicine,” he said. Lupus disease is commemorated worldwide every May 10,
It is hoped that all lupus patients will remain enthusiastic in trying to achieve remission so that they remain productive like people in general, said Anna Ariane.
