Anjet Daanje has won the Libris Literature Prize 2023 with her novel The song of stork and dromedary. Jury chairman Beatrice de Graaf announced the winner on Monday evening at the festive dinner in Felix Meritis in Amsterdam.
According to the five-member jury The song of stork and dromedary “everything excellent literature has to offer”. “Beautiful descriptions of nature, beautifully composed sentences, idiosyncratic sentence constructions, romantic poetry and a meaningful content. It is an extraordinary novel that touches hearts and minds. And which gives meaning to the mysterious cycle of life and death through the imagination.”
The jury read 236 books on the most diverse subjects, in different styles. From this longlist, the judges shortlisted six titles that “touched” them and that they “couldn’t just ignore”. “It is a shortlist that not only expresses the eloquence and beauty, but also the magic of literature,” said the jury.
In addition to Daanje, Oek de Jong, Donald Niedekker, Yves Petry, Peter Terrin and Peter Zantingh were also nominated for the award. The six writers all received an amount of 2,500 euros. The winner also received the main prize of 50,000 euros and a bronze medal.
The Libris Literature Prize has been awarded every year since 1994. Frida Vogels was the first winner. Since then, Harry Mulisch, Abdelkader Benali, Arthur Japin, Arnon Grunberg, Connie Palmen and Adriaan van Dis have already won the prize.
