A TBS’er from the Pompekliniek in Nijmegen escaped on Monday. The man ran off when he was outside the clinic with his supervisor during supervised leave, the Pompe Foundation reports.
The organization says that the police were immediately informed. A special police team is looking for the TBS prisoner. No details about him have been disclosed. The clinic canceled all leave on Monday because of the escape.
It is not the first time that patients in Nijmegen escape. Last November, a TBS detainee also escaped from the Pompekliniek during supervised leave. The 32-year-old man then stabbed a 27-year-old woman.
Last June, Sherwin W. and Luciano D. escaped from the same clinic in Nijmegen. D. was arrested in The Hague after nine days. W. was arrested in Spain in February.
The clinic has alarm systems, fences and locks, the Pompe Foundation says. Additional security measures were taken in 2019. So they could not prevent the escapes.
Regular investigations are carried out into risks in the buildings and on the grounds. According to the Pompe Foundation, it is customary for an inspection to follow an escape.
Lawyer does not think there is an acute danger
Lawyer Job Knoester says he does not know why his client ran off. The Gelderlander reports that the escaped forensic prisoner cycled away from his supervisor. According to multiple media, he is a sex offender.
Knoester does not want to say what the man was convicted of. The lawyer does not think there is an immediate danger and says that O. may have fled out of frustration.
Knoester indicates that so-called forensic care has been under pressure for some time and TBS’s may experience hopelessness due to longer waiting lists, among other things.
